Wreck of Economy - Scottish East Coast & Borders
Diving the *Economy* on Scotland’s east coast is a proper adventure, a real taste of North Sea wreck diving. We love that it’s not some sanitised museum piece; this is a working wreck, still giving up secrets to those willing to brave the chillier water and the sometimes-finicky conditions. The wreck itself, a steamer sunk way back in 1899, is wonderfully broken up. You get a real sense of the forces that tore her apart, with plates peeled back and machinery scattered. It’s less about intact structure and more about exploring the jumble, feeling your way through the darkness that often blankets parts of the deeper sections. Expect to find big cod lurking in the shadows, their eyes catching your torch beam, and ling snaking through the collapsed superstructure. We’ve even seen the odd wolf fish tucked away. The current can be brisk here, so it’s definitely one for experienced cold-water wreckies comfortable with low visibility and variable conditions. Our tip? Go with a local boat skipper who knows the tides intimately; they’ll put you right on it, maximising your bottom time on this genuinely atmospheric wreck. It’s not a dive for the faint-hearted, but for those who enjoy a bit of a challenge and a real sense of history, the *Economy* delivers.
