Wreck of Liberal - Scottish East Coast & Borders

The **Wreck of the Liberal** off the Scottish East Coast is one of those dives that sticks with you. We love it because it’s not just a pile of metal; there's a real sense of history here, a ghost ship from the days of sail, despite being a steamer. Dropping down, you hit the bow first, often surrounded by a swirling cloud of juvenile coalfish. The visibility can be tricky, classic Scottish diving, but on a good day, when the sun pierces through, the sheer scale of the wreck is incredible. We always make a point of exploring the engine room, which is still remarkably intact. It’s a tight squeeze in parts, but the exposed machinery, encrusted in dead man's fingers, really brings the ship to life. Look closely in the darker corners for ling and conger eels peeking out from behind corroded bulkheads. The stern section is our favourite for photography, especially with the ambient light filtering through the propeller aperture. This dive suits experienced wreck divers who appreciate a challenge and a bit of maritime history. Just remember your drysuit and a good torch; it’s dark down there, and the thermocline bites.
