Wreck of Mackerel - Scottish East Coast & Borders

The Mackerel sits broken on the seabed, a proper tangle of history and steel. We love a wreck with a story, and this trawler, sunk by a mine in 1918, certainly has one. Dropping down, you’re greeted by the ghostly silhouette of her bow, often shrouded in a thick school of coalfish that shimmer in the beam of your torch. Our favourite part has to be the stern, where the propeller still offers a stark photo opportunity against the murky green. Look closely in the twisted metal plates and you’ll spot crab, often a velvet swimmer or a grumpy edible one, clinging to the rust. This site is definitely one for the experienced cold-water diver, comfortable with limited visibility and ready to explore a dark, silty environment. It's an exploration dive, not a coral garden.
