Wreck of Scholastique - Scottish East Coast & Borders

The Wreck of Scholastique sits quietly on the seabed off Scotland’s East Coast, a proper piece of history waiting. We often find ourselves drawn to wrecks with a good story, and this 18th-century French frigate certainly delivers. It’s not about vibrant coral here, but the stark beauty of a wooden ship reclaimed by the North Sea. When you drop down, the timbers emerge from the gloom, often draped in long kelp fronds swaying with the surge. Visibility can be a bit hit-or-miss, as you'd expect in these parts, but on a good day, the scale of the wreckage is impressive. You’ll weave through ribs and broken hull sections, imagining the ship in its prime. It’s a site for the wreck enthusiast, someone who appreciates the history and the challenging, often moody, conditions that come with Scottish diving. Keep an eye out for wrasse darting between the timbers and the occasional inquisitive seal playing in the kelp nearby; they sometimes pop in to say hello. We’d recommend a spring or late summer dive for the best chance of settled conditions.
