HYPATIA - Cape Town & Western Cape

Hypatia. Just the name conjures images of a grand old dame, and she was, until Whale Rock claimed her in '29. Now, she's a fantastic training ground, shallow and relatively protected, making her one of our favourite wreck dives for less experienced divers around Cape Town. You’ll find her broken up, but there are still plenty of recognizable sections of hull and machinery scattered across the seabed at a consistent 6 metres. We love spending time here, slowly finning over the ribs of the wreck, spotting shy octopus tucked into crevices. Little anemones cling to the metal, waving gently in the surge, and schools of Hottentot dart between the plates. Look out for the nudibranchs, they’re often camouflaged beautifully against the rust. The visibility can be variable, but when it’s good, the light plays wonderfully through the kelp that’s started to colonize the larger pieces. It’s not a deep, dramatic penetration dive, but rather an engaging explore, perfect for refining buoyancy or for photographers wanting to practice wide-angle shots on a moody, historical subject.
