MIDDELBURG - Cape Town & Western Cape

The Middelburg is more than just a wreck; it’s a tangible piece of history sitting in Saldanha Bay, a really interesting counterpoint to the more common reef dives around here. This Dutch East Indiaman met her end in 1781, scuttled by her own crew to avoid capture by the English. We love the feeling of connecting with that past, imagining the porcelain she carried now scattered beneath the sand. Diving the Middelburg is like stepping into a time capsule. The wreck lies shallow, around 14 metres, making it accessible for most divers, though we’d suggest good buoyancy control to avoid kicking up the fine sediment. You'll find timbers emerging from the sand, dark and encrusted, where shy octopus often hide amongst the shadowy gaps. Shoals of hottentot fish dart between the ribs of the hull, and we’ve spotted small stingrays cruising over the sandy bottom nearby. Visibility can vary, but on a good day, the low light filtering through the bay’s calm waters gives it a wonderfully atmospheric feel. Our favourite part? Peeking into the darker corners, imagining the story each broken piece could tell. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration, perfect for those who appreciate history and the quiet beauty of a well-aged wreck.
