OCEANA POINT - Cape Town & Western Cape

Oceana Point. Now here’s a wreck that tells a story, even if it’s a bit of a sad one for the fishing vessel itself. Sunk on the very first night of the 1974 fishing season, reportedly overloaded and caught in heavy weather, she went down with her unusually large catch. Thankfully, the crew made it out safely, but the wreck remains, sitting at a comfortable 17 metres. We love this wreck for its accessibility and the way it’s become a home. The superstructure is still largely intact, offering easy penetration for those with the right training and comfort level. Expect to find shy pyjama sharks tucked into crevices and playful Cape fur seals zipping around, often using the wreck as a playground. On a good visibility day, the light filtering through the holds is quite something. We’d suggest going early in the morning before any wind picks up, which tends to stir up the sand and drop visibility. It’s a rewarding dive for anyone who enjoys exploring a wreck with a bit of history, without the demanding depths.
