El Peñon (Wreck) - Canary Islands

We’ve dived a lot of wrecks in the Canaries, and El Peñon is one of our favourites for a relaxed afternoon dip. It’s an old fishing trawler, probably scuttled on purpose, resting upright on a sandy bottom at 27 metres. What we love about it is how accessible it feels; you can swim right into the wheelhouse and peek into the cargo hold without any real training beyond Open Water. The light filters down beautifully, illuminating schools of sardines that swirl around the mast. Look closely and you’ll spot moray eels tucked into every crevice, their heads poking out with that characteristic grumpy look. We’ve even seen angel sharks cruising silently past the bow. The stern is particularly photogenic, covered in colourful anemones that sway gently with the surge. It’s a great spot for newer wreck divers to get a feel for penetration, or for experienced divers just wanting a chill dive with plenty to see without battling any major currents. The visibility is usually excellent, making it a truly pleasant experience.
