FRANCES MARIE - Canary Islands

The Frances Marie sits upright at 30 metres, a fishing trawler that went down off Maspalomas in 1968. She’s a lovely, photogenic wreck, not massive but definitely worth a dive, especially if you appreciate a good penetration. We love how the bow points north, just like she’s still steaming. You can drop straight onto the bridge, then follow the deck line towards the stern. Below decks, the engine room is the real highlight. You’ll need a torch, obviously, but the swim-throughs are surprisingly open, even for the less experienced wreck diver. We’ve found huge schools of grunts sheltering inside, their scales flashing in the beam of a light. Out on the deck, moray eels peek from every cranny, and the resident groupers aren’t shy either. For a relatively small wreck, she supports an impressive amount of life, a testament to the decades she’s spent on the seabed. It’s a site that suits those who appreciate a bit of history with their marine life, and it's a great spot for underwater photographers.
