GURE CONCHI - Canary Islands

Gure Conchi. Now here’s a wreck with a story, and one we always enjoy revisiting. This old fishing trawler, sunk back in '99, rests upright, her bow nudging the shore and her stern dropping to around 30 metres. It’s got a somber history, with lives lost when she ran aground, but now she’s a busy artificial reef. We love the way the light filters through the structure, especially on a sunny morning. You can still make out the wheelhouse, the mast, and the winches, all heavily draped in sponges and anemones. Schools of barracuda often circle the mast, their silver scales flashing, and we’ve spotted huge dusky groupers tucked into the deeper sections of the hull. For photographers, the engine room offers some fantastic shots, with shafts of light highlighting nudibranchs clinging to the metalwork. Our favourite time to dive Gure Conchi is mid-morning, just as the day boats are heading out, leaving us with a bit more solitude to explore her ribs. It’s a comfortable dive for anyone familiar with wrecks, offering both shallower sections for newer divers and deeper penetration for those with the right training.
