Why dive here
With 140+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - B109 offers some of Scapa Flow, Orkney's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 8-14°C, warmest July, August, September.
Dropping onto the B109 in Scapa Flow, you’re greeted by the skeletal remains of a WWI German destroyer. She sits upright, roughly 18 metres down, though time and salvage have left her quite broken up. What’s left is a fascinating jumble of twisted metal; we’ve often found interesting small swim-throughs where the deck plating has collapsed. Look closely and you'll spot plenty of wrasse darting amongst the girders, plus anemones and dead man’s fingers clinging to the darker recesses. It’s a compelling dive for those who appreciate the history and the sheer scale of these wrecks, offering a more intimate exploration than some of the larger battleships.
