Wreck of Adventure - Scapa Flow, Orkney

Diving Scapa Flow always feels like stepping back in time, and the wreck possibly known as the *Daghestan* is no exception. We love this site for its character – less about the sheer size of the battleships, more about the quiet dignity of a merchant vessel. You drop down onto what feels like a ghost from another era, with the hull plates draped in kelp, swaying gently in the subtle flow. Our favourite part is poking around the holds, imagining what cargo it once carried. Light penetrates surprisingly well on a bright day, illuminating the skeletal structure now home to a fascinating mix of cold-water life. We've seen some hefty thornback skates cruising past, and the anemones here, particularly the beadlets and North Sea tube anemones, are especially vibrant. The corkwing wrasse are always darting in and out, bold and curious. It’s a rewarding dive for those who appreciate history and the way nature reclaims man-made structures, without the pressure of deeper, more exposed Scapa sites. We'd suggest checking the tide tables carefully; even subtle currents can make a big difference in enjoyment here.
