Wreck of Argyle - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The ‘Iona’ is one of those Scapa Flow wrecks that we find ourselves returning to, even if its true identity is still a bit of a mystery. We’re talking about a classic Blockship here, intentionally scuttled to defend the eastern approaches during WWII. Dropping onto her bow, you immediately get a sense of that wartime purpose. The hull is upright and largely intact, encrusted now with those deep-water anemones and colourful hydroids that are so typical of the Flow. What we really love about the Iona is the way the light filters through the structure. It’s never bright down here, but the ambient light playing on the kelp-covered deck and the occasional swim-throughs creates a really atmospheric dive. Look for the Curled octopus tucked into crevices, and we’ve often seen Atlantic cod patrolling the deeper sections. Visibility can be a bit variable, so pick a day with a settled forecast. It’s a great dive for anyone keen on wreck penetration without too much overhead risk. Just remember, these are protected wrecks, so look but don’t touch.
