Wreck of Empire Parsons - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The Wahine wreck just off Kaikōura is a moody, often challenging dive, and that’s precisely why we love it. Forget gentle drifts and sunshine; this site delivers a proper South Island experience. The old inter-island ferry, famously sunk in a 1968 storm, now lies broken and scattered across the seabed, its skeletal remains colonised by an impressive array of life. We often find leopard seals cruising the area, their curious eyes watching you from the gloom. Swarms of butterfly perch dart through the gaps in the hull, and snapper lurk in the deeper sections. It’s not a single, intact structure to penetrate, but more a sprawling debris field that rewards slow, meticulous exploration. Look for the engine room section, where the machinery still hints at its former purpose, now draped in Neptune's necklace seaweed. Visibility can swing wildly; on a good day, you might see 15 metres, but often it's closer to five, which only adds to the atmospheric, slightly eerie vibe. This is a dive for those who appreciate history and a bit of a rugged adventure, not for casual sightseers. Plan your dive for slack tide to avoid the strongest currents.
