Wreck of shipwreck possibly the Victory - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The Empire Seaman in Scapa Flow isn't just a wreck, it's a deep dive into history, a tangible connection to wartime Orkney. We've always been drawn to how Scapa Flow’s wrecks feel like time capsules, and this one, a German merchant ship scuttled in 1940, definitely fits that bill. Dropping down, you hit the bow first, and the sheer scale starts to sink in. We love finning along the deck, past the superstructure. It’s a proper penetration dive if you’re qualified, with plenty to explore in the holds, though some sections are silty, so good buoyancy is key. Our favourite part is the engine room, it’s remarkably intact, with machinery still recognisable. Around the wreck, the local life is thriving. You'll often spot wrasse darting between the metalwork, and the anemones, particularly the North Sea Tube Anemones, add splashes of colour to the gloom. Visibility can vary here; strong currents are less of an issue than some other Flow sites, but check the tides to avoid a murky day. This one is for divers who appreciate the story behind the steel, and aren't afraid of a bit of chill in the water.
