Wreck of Unnamed Shipwreck - Canmore 101857 - Scapa Flow, Orkney

Forget the big names for a minute, because Canmore 102191, one of Scapa's many "unnamed" wrecks, offers a different kind of dive. It’s not about grand scale or intact structure here, but a real sense of history. We’ve spent hours just picking through the scattered plates and twisted metal, imagining the chaos of its end. Visibility can vary wildly, but on a good day, the light filters down through the kelp, illuminating the dark shapes of poor cod hiding in the crevices. What we really love about this site is the sheer density of life in a relatively small area. Turn over a loose plate and you might spot a curled octopus peeking out, or an anglerfish perfectly camouflaged against the seabed. The bull rout are surprisingly bold, often letting you get quite close. It’s a dive for those who enjoy taking their time, exploring the details rather than swimming a circuit. We’d suggest going at slack water, as currents can pick up and make close inspection tricky. Keep an eye out for the mauve stingers drifting by in late summer; they add a splash of colour, even if you don't want to touch them. It's an intimate, reflective dive, a quiet counterpoint to the more dramatic battleships.
