Wreck of Unnamed Shipwreck - Canmore 101945 - Scapa Flow, Orkney

Dropping onto this unnamed wreck in Scapa Flow, we love the immediate sense of history it brings. It's not a named German battleship, sure, but it's part of that incredible story, a smaller vessel often overlooked but equally fascinating. We've often found ourselves tracing the outline of her hull, feeling the chill of the Orkney water, and marveling at how the metal has softened over decades, creating nooks and crannies for the resident critters. Look for the butterfish darting in and out of exposed girders, their iridescent scales a flash against the rust. You’ll often spot common seals patrolling the area, their curiosity sometimes bringing them right up to your mask for a quick inspection before they gracefully bank away. Our favourite time to dive here is on a slack tide, obviously, when visibility can stretch to a decent 10-15 metres, allowing you to really appreciate the scale of the structure and the way the kelp fronds wave with the gentle surge. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the quiet dignity of a forgotten piece of history and the hardy marine life that has made it home.
