Wreck of Unnamed Shipwreck - Canmore 102245 - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The Ac6, a German WWI destroyer, lies on its port side, a fantastic example of the Scapa Flow wrecks that aren't the big battleships. It’s got a real character, and we love the way the light filters through the structure on a decent day. You can follow the deck line, spotting the occasional poor cod or snake blenny darting into crevices. We always spend time exploring the torpedo tubes, imagining the history, before heading into the engine room, which is surprisingly open and accessible. The marine growth here is impressive, with a thick carpet of acorn barnacles and beadlet anemones. If you’re lucky, a thornback skate might glide past in the murk. Visibility can be a bit of a lottery, as it is with most of Scapa, so pick your day carefully; incoming tides often bring clearer water. It’s a rewarding dive for those comfortable with wreck penetration and who appreciate the stories these steel hulks tell.
