Diving the Unnamed Shipwreck, Canmore 103013, in Scapa Flow is a different kind of Orkney dive. It’s not one of the big German battleships, but that’s precisely why we love it. This is a quieter wreck, less picked over, sitting often in slightly better visibility than some of its famous neighbours. We think it's probably a trawler, or something similar, lying fairly upright. As you descend, the hull plates slowly resolve from the green gloom, often adorned with plumose anemones catching the current. We’ve found the stern section is particularly interesting, with some of the superstructure still intact, offering sheltered nooks for wrasse and even the occasional conger eel. Look for the small, jewel-like nudibranchs creeping along the metalwork – they’re easy to miss if you’re focused solely on the sheer scale of the wreck. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the subtle beauty of a wreck reclaiming its place on the seabed, rather than a deep penetration challenge. Our best dives here have always been on a slack tide, giving us plenty of time to explore the nooks without fighting the flow.
Safety Notes
Wreck site - avoid penetration without wreck diving certification. Watch for sharp metal and entanglement hazards.
Cold water this month (avg 13°C). Drysuit or thick wetsuit (7mm+) recommended.
