YOUNG FOX (POSSIBLY) - Scapa Flow, Orkney

The Young Fox, or what we believe to be her, is an absolute standout if you’re into the deeper, more mysterious wrecks of Scapa Flow. Dropping onto her deck at 43 metres, the sheer scale is initially what hits you. She’s a sailing vessel, not one of the German fleet, lost in heavy weather back in '28, and you can truly feel that history down there. The masts are long gone, but the lines of her hull are still distinct, a classic sailing ship shape, often silhouetted against the slightly greener light of the depths. We love exploring the hold, a vast, dark space where conger eels often lurk, thick as a diver's thigh. The timbers are encrusted with jewel anemones and dead man’s fingers, splashes of orange and white against the dark wood. Our favourite part is the bow, where the anchor chain still spills out, draped in kelp and frequented by curious wrasse. This site is perfect for experienced divers comfortable with depth and low visibility, who appreciate the quiet solitude of a truly historical, enigmatic wreck. Be prepared for chilly water and take your time; there’s a real sense of discovery here.
